Fellowship Manager

Second Day is looking for a Fellowship Manager to join our team.

About Second Day:

Second Day comes from an apocryphal Mark Twain quote: “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” For 5+ years, Second Day has been on the leading edge of social impact career discernment and discovery. We have partnered with 50+ colleges to improve their resources for social impact careers, run a fellowship for 200+ young professionals to get their first break into full-time social change work, advocated for policy changes, and partnered with organizations to dismantle inequitable talent practices like unpaid internships and barriers to hiring.

Our core values are:

  • Practical Guidance: Prioritizing actionable advice over empty words to provide tangible guidance.

  • Radical Transparency: Guiding our actions through honest and transparent communication.

  • Unwavering Ethical Standards: Striving to do the right thing, especially when faced with uncertainty.

  • Continuous Learning for Improvement: Embracing continual iteration and improvement for positive change.

  • Lived Experience Leadership: Believing in leaders with lived experience as drivers of sustainable social change.

  • Challenging the Norms: Dedicated to disrupting norms and questioning outdated conventions.

You can watch videos from two of our co-founders Phil and Mariam, as well as Jorge, Executive Director, talking about this work and why it is significant.

About the Role:

As the Fellowship Manager at Second Day, your role will be pivotal in advancing the organization's mission to shape the future of social impact careers. You will be at the heart of managing and enhancing the Impact Fellowship program, a critical initiative designed to open doors for young professionals passionate about making a difference. Your responsibilities will include not just overseeing the daily operations of the Fellowship, but also innovatively expanding and refining it to meet evolving needs and opportunities. The Fellowship Manager will play a large role in the scaling of Second Day’s impact and we envision them growing into a leadership position as the organization grows.

In this role, you will actively create and nurture pathways for aspiring changemakers, guiding them into careers that align with their values and ambitions for social change. This involves curating a suite of opportunities and experiences that are both meaningful and transformative, thereby enabling these young professionals to kickstart their journey in the social impact sector. This role reports to, and is supported by, the Executive Director. Key responsibilities include:

Program Management

  • Oversee and refine the fellowship program, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.

  • Collaborate with nonprofits and social enterprises to scope and create quality internship opportunities.

  • Manage the entire cycle of fellowship activities, from recruitment to placement, to evaluation.

Fellow Engagement

  • Oversee the selection and matching process of fellows to internships.

  • Carry out professional development, mentorship, and career coaching initiatives.

  • Build a sense of community for the ~70 fellows each year to feel supported by Second Day and each other during this critical transition point in their lives.

  • Support the recruitment and matching of mentors working in social impact to advise fellows.

Strategic Planning and Evaluation

  • Contribute to the strategic planning of the fellowship program.

  • Monitor and assess program effectiveness, making data-driven improvements.

  • Report on program outcomes and impact to stakeholders.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with the Second Day team to promote the fellowship and recruit candidates.

  • Maintain strong relationships with partner organizations and mentors.

  • Communicate regularly with Fellows to provide guidance and support.

Who You Are:

  • A dynamic individual passionate about social impact and mentorship.

  • Experienced in partnership development and program management.

  • Comfortable working in a small, remote team environment.

  • Enjoys organizing systems and keeping track of complex information over time

  • Enthusiastic about continuous learning and trying new ideas.

  • Passionate about supporting young changemakers to achieve their social impact career dreams.

  • Skilled at facilitating workshops and community-building activities.

We are intentionally not limiting our search to a certain number of years of experience because we believe in skills-based hiring. If you think you would be good at the role, we encourage you to apply!

Role Logistics and Compensation:

  • Location - This role is a full-time role. The role is fully remote within North America with an option to be hybrid if based out of Denver, CO. US work authorization is strongly preferred. Some light travel within the US is expected.

  • Compensation - Currently scoped at $60,000 - $70,000. The role also includes a healthcare benefit through an HRA plan.

  • Sustainability - We will work with you during onboarding to understand what is important to your sustainability and try to structure your role around it. Four day work week? Not checking email at night? Different work hours to support time with loved ones? We believe in finding something that makes this the best job in the world. This position also comes with unlimited PTO. In addition, Second Day observes 11 holidays, including Election Day.

  • Professional Development - We know that you won’t be working at Second Day for the rest of your life and that it takes a lot of energy and effort to work at a startup. We’ll work with you on scoping the role to fit in well with your long-term career goals and help you make that next step happen whenever the time comes. We can also make targeted professional development investments that are important to you, whether it is training, a coach, or something else. We push our Fellows and partners on development and try to live it ourselves.

Application and Selection Process:

The goal of this process is not just to hire the right fit, but to ensure that you have the chance to deeply understand the organization and get all your questions answered before taking the plunge with us. This entire process will be virtual.

To apply for the role, please complete this form (we are no longer accepting applications) by February 15th. It asks for some basic background info, your resume, and one written or video recorded response: why are you interested in the role? What are you most/least excited about it?

A set of semi-finalists will be selected by February 19th. They will have an assignment and then will schedule an hour long case interview with the Second Day team.

A set of 2-3 finalists will be selected by March 1st. These finalists will have a more extensive series of activities and conversations with different Second Day stakeholders and community members. Because we know this would require significant effort, we’ll be compensating candidates for time spent during the finalist process.

We plan to extend an offer by March 15th and ideally would have the new Fellowship Manager begin their role on April 1st

*These dates are tentative and subject to change as life happens. If you need a different timeline or accommodations, please let us know ASAP.

Please reach out to Jorge Méndez, Executive Director, at jorge@secondday.org with any questions!
